Providence, RI – The Alliance for Nonprofit Impact at United Way of Rhode Island has partnered with Partridge Snow & Hahn LLP to create a new, multi-part legal learning series for nonprofits. The series will feature 3 sessions each year, and the sessions are free and open to all Rhode Island nonprofits.
The first session, titled “Rhode Island Public Charity Regulatory and Corporate Governance Best Practices,” will be held virtually on Zoom on Wednesday, September 11, from 9am to 10:30am. Nonprofits interested in attending are asked to register in advance online. All sessions will be led by Partridge Snow & Hahn attorneys and are designed to address legal issues relevant to Rhode Island nonprofits.
“These sessions are tremendous opportunities for all local nonprofits, not just Alliance members, to get access to expertise and guidance that isn’t usually available to them. It is essential that nonprofits understand their legal responsibilities, and most don’t have legal support to walk through this vital information with them,” said Nancy Wolanski, director of the Alliance for Nonprofit Impact. “This is an example of the Alliance’s efforts to mobilize support from all sectors to help strengthen local nonprofits. We’re thrilled to partner with Partridge Snow & Hahn.”
Attendees of the September 11 session will be introduced to topics that include:
- Requirements and standards for officers and directors, and other key provisions under the Nonprofit Corporation Act;
- An overview of tax compliance to maintain public charity status;
- Best practices for bylaws and checks and balances in governance; and
- Registration requirements with the Department of Business Regulation.

It was created as a singular advocacy and capacity building hub to serve the unique needs of the state’s entire nonprofit sector and to support the vital services nonprofits provide to local communities. In its first seven months, 347 nonprofits have signed on as members.
